Cloud computing is becoming more prevalent in today's society as more professionals are using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to work from home on web-based systems. Chiropractors can also utilize cloud technology by purchasing web-based EHR software, which would enable these doctors to analyze medical data and diagnose patients while away from the office.

Services providing cloud computing also benefit the patients in many different ways. For example, last year, Dell – a provider of computer systems – launched cloud-based research technology, which is now being utilized in a medical clinical trial for childhood cancer.

Since spinal cancer is a very real possibility among a variety of patients, chiropractors would be wise to pay attention to the impact of the cloud for this type of disease. James Coffin, vice president and general manager of Dell Healthcare and Life Sciences, discussed with Healthcare IT News how this computing system drastically reduces the amount of time necessary to identify an appropriate treatment for a child with cancer.

Web-based medical software can also allow the children to be designated for certain potentially life-saving clinical trials. Coffin said that recently his organization ran a full genome test for one patient and clinicians were able to make a decision on treatment in less than five days.

"There's an inflection point in genomic science right now, where we have these new, next generation sequencers that are coming out over the last six months from companies like Illumina and Life Technologies, and then we have very very fact computing, and new processors coming out from Intel," Coffin told the news source.
