The Internet has never been more prevalent than it is today. It is practically impossible for professionals in any industry to not use the Internet on a daily basis. In fact, using web-based medical software has become more common in the medical field. Because of the growth of the online world, various studies focus on the importance of the Internet in today's society.

On April 17, the Internet Society released the results of a study that illustrates the public and economic benefits of establishing Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in growing industries. This study analyzed the costs and performance quality of IXPs in Nigeria and Kenya.

IXPs are vital sources of data traffic exchange, which influences the healthcare field due to its overabundance of patient information. According to a press release, more than 350 IXPs serve the world's internet users by bringing local Internet Service Providers and Internet carriers to exchange internet traffic efficiently. Well-developed IXPs reduce costs by eliminating the need for domestic Internet traffic to rely on long-distance international links.

This particular study found that the Kenya IXP saved Internet Service Providers close to $1.5 million annually on international connection charges by speeding data to an average of two to 10 milliseconds. Nigeria's IXP achieved a similar outcome in cost reduction, in which operators saved more than $1 million yearly.

In Nigeria, improved Internet access has enabled citizens to handle their finances through online banking and access online tax and custom services.

"This study puts into clear context the commonly accepted, but seldom quantified proposition that IXPs are essential for any country aspiring to tap into the global Internet economy," Karen Rose, senior director of development strategy at the Internet Society, said in a press release.

Because the internet is very much a necessity to our society, chiropractors would benefit from implementing web-based EHR software capable of immediate installation and easing chiropractic workflow.
